How to protect lacquer objects, surfaces, and finishes.
Direct sunlight is the enemy of lacquer. UV rays will fade the surface and cause the lacquer to dry out and crack. Keep lacquer objects away from windows, or use UV-filtering glass if display in sunlight is unavoidable.
Lacquer needs some humidity to maintain its flexibility. In very dry climates (heated interiors in winter), use a humidifier or place a small water dish near the lacquer object. Ideal humidity: 50–70%.
Lacquer surfaces are durable but can be scratched by metal objects. Do not place keys, rings, or metal utensils on lacquer surfaces. Use a soft cloth as a barrier if needed.
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use water, detergent, or any cleaning solution. Do not use brass polish. If the surface becomes dull, rub gently with a soft cotton cloth to restore the sheen.
Never put lacquer objects in the dishwasher. The heat and water will destroy the lacquer surface. Hand wipe only.
Lacquer objects can be displayed indefinitely if protected from sunlight and extreme dryness. Rotate displayed pieces periodically to ensure even exposure. The surface will deepen in colour with age — this is desired and beautiful.
