[Artisan Name] has been working with incense materials for over 20 years. Based in a small studio outside Hangzhou, he blends natural incense materials — sandalwood, aloeswood, cedar, and herbs — for daily use, not for display.
'Incense is not perfume,' he says. 'Perfume is for other people. Incense is for you. It is a way to mark a moment — the beginning of the morning, the end of the workday, the transition into sleep.'
His approach is minimalist. Each blend contains no more than five ingredients. The goal is not complexity but clarity — a scent that is present without demanding attention.
'The best incense,' he says, 'is the one you forget you lit. It changes the room, and then it disappears, and the room is different.'
He also makes incense holders and stands, working with bamboo and wood to create simple, functional objects that complement his scent blends. The holders are designed to be invisible — the incense should be the focus, not the object holding it.
